How can implants be of use to me?
Missing teeth can be permanently replaced using dental implants, meaning function and appearance can
be restored on a permanent basis.
What does it involve?
The implants are placed in the actual jawbone. They are
made from titanium, a metal which is well-accepted by the
body. The bone grows right up to the implant and effectively
cements it in. This is a permanent solution, which can mean
that you throw away your dentures forever. Putting in implants
is a surgical procedure.
There must be sufficient t jawbone to fix the implants into.
If there is not enough bone, there are alternative procedures
that can be used, but these do make the treatment more complicated.
Do you use general anaesthetic?
Usually implants are placed while the patient is under local
anaesthetic with a sedative. The surgery is carried out
by a visiting oral and maxillofacial surgeon who will discuss
the procedure with you in more detail.
Is the work painful?
While patients may experience some discomfort following
a surgical procedure, the majority of patients need no pain
relief within one day of the work being carried out. The
procedure is actually surprisingly painless.
What happens after the work has been done?
Implant procedures are followed with check-up appointments to ensure there are no complications and to make sure the
implants are healing well.
How do you decide what work needs to be done?
During a consultation with you, we will discuss what you
want to achieve and the most appropriate ways to achieve
it.
We then decide together on the best way to proceed.
How long will it take?
That depends on what work will be carried out and is
agreed at the consultation stage.
How much will it cost?
Again, this is entirely dependent on the work to be done.
Most prosthodontic work is not cheap, but some costs may
be claimed on ACC if the work is necessary because of an
accident.
Will there be extra, hidden costs involved?
No. Everything will be fully planned before any work begins.
